About Longhand

Longhand is an independent journal of essays and practical guides for people who would rather read one good thing than skim twenty.

Why we started

Longhand began as a shared notebook between three friends who kept sending each other long messages about things worth slowing down for: a bakery on a Lisbon side street, a chair with perfect proportions, a train route through the mountains. Eventually it made sense to give those notes a proper home.

Today we publish new stories every week across four topics: design, travel, food and culture. Some are practical guides you can use this weekend. Others are essays about the small habits that make ordinary days better.

What we believe

  • Fewer, better stories. We would rather publish one piece we are proud of than five we are not.

  • Useful over clever. Every guide should leave you able to do something you could not do before.

  • No noise. No pop-ups, no autoplay and no sponsored stories dressed up as editorial.

Reading with us

The easiest way to keep up is our newsletter, a short email whenever new stories are published. You can also follow along through our RSS feed, or simply come back on a quiet Sunday morning with a cup of coffee. That is how we like to read, too.
